Plumbing emergencies don’t wait for business hours. Whether it’s a burst pipe, overflowing toilet, or a leaking water heater, knowing how to quickly shut off your water can mean the difference between a minor mess and major damage.

So here’s the big question: Do you know where your water main shut-off is?

Two Common Shut-Off Locations

  1. Inside the Garage or Utility RoomIn many newer homes, the main water shut-off valve is conveniently located inside—usually in the garage, utility room, or near your water heater. This valve is often a lever-style handle that you turn 90 degrees to stop the water flow. It’s fast, accessible, and easy to operate in a pinch.
  2. Outside at the Water MeterIf you can’t find a valve inside, your next stop is the water meter. This is typically located near the street in a concrete or metal box. Inside that box, you’ll find a shut-off valve (often requiring a water key or wrench to operate). It’s a little less convenient but still crucial in an emergency.

Pro Tip from RED Plumbing

We recommend every homeowner take 5 minutes to find and test your shut-off valve BEFORE you need it. If it’s hard to turn, corroded, or stuck, give us a call. We’ll get it working smoothly or replace it altogether.

Don’t wait for a leak to learn where it’s located!

Being prepared can save you thousands in water damage and stress. If you’re unsure where your shut-off is, or want a pro to inspect and label it, R.E.D. Plumbing has your back.

John Hickey★★★★★

Andrew was so helpful. He was able to get my sewage pump up and running, saving me having to buy a new one! Very pleasant and found confidence in him right off. Next plumbing problem, calling R.E.D.

Cheryl Cuskelly★★★★★

I had Shawn, RED technician, re-level two toilets that had been installed too high on one side. Shawn was great. He leveled both toilets perfectly level, replaced the wax rings, caulked and cleaned up after he was done. Shawn was friendly, respectful, on time and completed the job to my satisfaction. Thank you RED for hiring experienced, knowledgeable and courteous technicians and staff.

Brian Wilson★★★★★

R.E.D. did an excellent job moving some plumbing and installing a new bathtub. They finished the job more quickly than anticipated, and left the work area spotless (and in fact, actually cleaned other areas of the house on the way out). Based on this experience I would highly recommend them.
