Garbage disposals are handy kitchen tools—until they suddenly stop working. If yours has gone quiet or won’t spin, don’t panic! Often, a simple reset is all it needs to get back to work.

Here’s how you can safely reset your garbage disposal in just a few easy steps.

First Things First: Safety Check

Before doing anything, make sure your disposal is turned OFF. That means unplug it from the outlet under your sink or turn off the breaker that powers it. Never stick your hand down the drain, even if the unit is off.

Step 1: Press the Reset Button

Most disposals have a small red reset button on the bottom of the unit (underneath the sink).

  1. Look under your sink and locate the garbage disposal.
  2. Find the red button on the bottom of the unit. If it’s popped out, that’s a sign the disposal has tripped.
  3. Press the button firmly until you hear it click.
  4. Restore power and turn on the disposal to see if it’s working.

If that doesn’t do the trick, move on to Step 2.

Step 2: Manually Free the Flywheel

Sometimes, a jammed flywheel is the culprit. Most disposals can be manually rotated to clear the blockage.

  1. Turn off power (again, this is important).
  2. Underneath the disposal, locate the hex-shaped hole in the center.
  3. Insert a ¼-inch Allen wrench (hex key) into the hole.
  4. Turn the wrench back and forth a few times to manually rotate the flywheel and dislodge any stuck debris.
  5. Remove the wrench, press the reset button again, and restore power.

Still not working? Try shining a flashlight down the drain to check for obvious obstructions like silverware or food. Use tongs or pliers—never your fingers—to remove them.

Bonus Tip: Keep It Running Smoothly

To avoid future clogs or shutdowns:

  • Avoid putting fibrous foods (like celery), grease, or bones down the disposal.
  • Run cold water before, during, and after use.
  • Clean it regularly with baking soda and vinegar.

Need a Hand?

If you’ve tried all the above and your disposal still isn’t working, it might be time to call in the pros. R.E.D. Plumbing is just a call away and happy to help troubleshoot or replace your garbage disposal if needed.

John Hickey★★★★★

Andrew was so helpful. He was able to get my sewage pump up and running, saving me having to buy a new one! Very pleasant and found confidence in him right off. Next plumbing problem, calling R.E.D.

Cheryl Cuskelly★★★★★

I had Shawn, RED technician, re-level two toilets that had been installed too high on one side. Shawn was great. He leveled both toilets perfectly level, replaced the wax rings, caulked and cleaned up after he was done. Shawn was friendly, respectful, on time and completed the job to my satisfaction. Thank you RED for hiring experienced, knowledgeable and courteous technicians and staff.

Brian Wilson★★★★★

R.E.D. did an excellent job moving some plumbing and installing a new bathtub. They finished the job more quickly than anticipated, and left the work area spotless (and in fact, actually cleaned other areas of the house on the way out). Based on this experience I would highly recommend them.
